Garden Planter News

Using garden planters to create a stylish display

Have you spent hours maintaining beautiful and eye catching plants and flowers, yet have nowhere to show them off? Or perhaps you have painfully crafted and teased your perennials into show stopping topiaries, to find that your garden planter just doesn’t do it justice. Precious Design have got the answer to all of your horticultural problems.

With planters in all shapes and sizes, finishes and design styles, Precious Design offer a range of pots and planters to suit your needs. Individual and commercial buyers will find high quality and well finished planters for both indoor and outdoor use that will really show off your displays. Whatever you choose, your stunning topiary or display will look fantastic sitting on your patio, deck or balcony in one of our equally beautiful planters.
We know that you work hard on the maintenance of your plants and want your displays to do them justice, which is why our range of planters are of high quality and suit any garden design, from traditional to corporate to rooftop city gardens and small undiscovered nooks. Your displays look good, and our garden planters only serve to intensify this. We have troughs, to display those smaller plants, or the tailor range of planters would be perfect for your taller displays.

The shop offers standard sizes of all of our range and custom sizes are also available for order if your topiary or display requires something personalised. For corporate customers we can personalise your garden planters by laser cutting logos into the planter, or if you’ve crafted your topiary for a gift you could add a personalised message.

Precious Design pots and planters are made in a variety of different materials and the benefits that the range will offer to your garden and to your plants are exceptional. You are faced with a choice of colours which can make your displays stand out or accentuate a specific flower; perhaps you want to bring out a certain colour that is sparse in your display by matching it with your garden planter. With our custom colour selection you can choose almost any colour you wish!

We make all of our products out of high quality materials from zinc galvanised steel to brushed stainless steel and finishes from a ribbed texture to a mirror polished stainless steel. Open up your garden by reflecting the rest of your planters in your product from Precious Design, or add a more distinguished look with a ribbed finish that will also protect your planter from corrosion.

No matter where they’re positioned, these garden planters offer design style and will accentuate the hard work you have put into your displays or topiary, really showing off your skills, and your garden.

Growing Herbs in Garden Planters

Garden Planters are perfect for growing herbs, whether you want to grow a large amount of an individual herb, or start a small variety garden in a small space. Our range of garden planters are perfect for this!

Is it an urban myth that when selling a house, you should bake bread or make coffee when you have people coming to view? Whether that’s true or not, it’s certainly not a myth that supermarkets use the scent of their instore bakery to encourage us to purchase baked goods, or that scent is the sense most closely linked to memory. And the scent of herbs can be one of the most evocative, linked as it often is to summer, sunshine, and cooking indoors and out.

Herb planters
It’s also easy to grow herbs, because they are very good plants for growing in plant containers, window boxes and garden planters, both indoors and out.

Herbs like mint, rosemary and lemon balm can be thugs in the garden. They are very vigorous plants, often invasive, and so can take over a herb patch, pushing out less vigorous competition and spreading around your garden. But in plant containers, you can control their size much more easily: they behave beautifully, and with suitable care, will live happily for years. Of course you need to water them more than in a garden bed, but these herbs are pretty tough customers, and will survive a bit of neglect better than most. And in one of our coloured metal planters, they will look great too, with the soft green of the foliage perfectly complementing the vibrant painted finish. And in winter, when the herbs are underground, you will still have the pot to admire!

Mediterranean herbs, like basil and parsley, which really don’t like cold, are perfect for garden planters. They can be started from seed indoors in small plant pots, and then moved to a larger planter either indoors or out once they are big enough. Growing several herbs together, perhaps in one of our mirror stainless steel garden planters, will make a mouth-watering display of culinary herbs that will last all summer.

Growing vegetables in garden planters

Do you think growing vegetables needs a huge plot of land or an allotment? Think again, because you don’t actually need very much space to grow fantastic vegetables. Using garden planters for your vegetables can be a big advantage, because you can move them inside if a late frost is forecast, move them into the sunshine if you’ve got your placing wrong, and hide them away when they’ve finished and/or you are bored of looking at them!

Preparing Your Planters For Growth

Much as we wish they would, beautiful planter displays don’t happen overnight. There’s usually a lot of planning gone into them beforehand such as which flowers or plants would look best in particular locations, how much sunlight they’ll pick up and what type of soil they’ll fare best with etc.
Here we’ll take you through some preliminaries to make sure you get the best from your garden planters purchase at Precious Design.

GARDEN PLANTERS WITHOUT PLANTS

So you think garden planters can only be used for plants? Well, think again!  Metal planters in particular can be used in lots of ways to enhance your garden.

For example, galvanized steel planters and stainless steel garden planters from Precious Design make great ponds and water features.  A shiny metal surface will act as a mirror, lighting up small dark spaces, as light glints off both the water and the plant container, and the galvanisation will stop any corrosion.  Make sure you order a garden planter without drainage holes though!

If you really feel a garden planter should have plants, then how about a planted pond?  Use a large planter, and include a few bricks to vary the height inside.  Add a small water-lily such as yellow-flowered Nymphaea x helvola, some vertical plants such as iris or rushes, and some oxygenators to keep the water healthy.  You can even keep a few fish, though you will have to protect the plant container against frost in winter, and you’ll also need to choose one of our stainless steel garden planters, perhaps a stainless steel cube, or line it with pond liner, as the zinc in galvanised steel can be toxic to fish and invertebrates.  Your container pond will need a bit of attention to keep the plants to a reasonable size, but nothing you can’t handle!

Alternatively, if you prefer, you could relax to the gentle sound of splashing water, with the addition of a small solar-powered fountain to your water-filled garden planter, or top it with pebbles, and add a purpose-built small stone water feature with pump, available from most good garden centres.  The tapered garden planters would make wonderful water feature fountains, with light reflecting off the water drops and the faces of the pot.

Or how about a row of small stainless steel garden planters in the shape of cubes, each containing a light, to extend your evenings outdoors? Settle the light into the cube, putting the electricity cable through the drainage holes, and top with pebbles for an attractive finish.  Look for unusual lights that will complement your beautiful garden pots and sit back and enjoy your plant-free plant containers!

And why stop there?  You could use garden planters as stands for modern sculptures, or for beautiful, architectural displays of dried flowers or gold-painted twisted willow, or for anything else you want – the list is endless. Or even have them stand alone so that you can enjoy the elegance and simplicity of the galvanised steel planters themselves: after all, Precious Design really does do metal planters extremely well!

Unusual Plants for Unusual Plant Containers

What can you grow in garden planters?  It’s not a natural place to grow shrubs, climbers or perennials: they get too dry, they run out of food, you need to feed and water them regularly, and then they grow too big. Surely you can really only grow annuals?  Well, no.  The answer is that you can grow pretty much any plant in plant containers, as long as you choose the right container.

It’s important not to use plant pots that are too big or too small: too big, and the soil may go bad; too small, and the plant will get root-bound and not grow well.  So you may need several garden plant pots over the lifetime of the plant, especially if it grows quite big.  And you also need the shape to be right: so that the rootball fits into the pot comfortably, with about the same amount of space all around it.

But that’s the joy of using Precious Design metal planters for your plants. There is such a variety of shapes: tall, cubic, square, tapered.  And with
most off-the-shelf designs and shapes available in several sizes, you can choose the right shape for your plant, and know that you will be able to buy new garden planters the same shape when you need them.  And if you get bored of the original colour or finish, just choose a new one for your new pot, perhaps even a custom finish.  Your old pot, in the meantime, will go on to be home to a new plant, and will look great grouped with your new one.
